The CDG has received the following response from the Minister regarding the announcement The UK will not be attending The UNCRPD Review.
START
Thank you for your email of 18 September about the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
The Government is fully committed to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the advancement of rights for disabled people in this country.
We have followed all of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities’ necessary procedures and we will present the UK’s progress, as agreed by the Committee, entirely properly, at their session in March 2024.
In July, we launched an accessible 12-week consultation on our new Disability Action Plan, which is part of this Government’s commitment to create a society that works for everyone, where all can participate and be fully included. The Disability Action Plan will set out the immediate action the Government will take in 2023 and 2024 to improve disabled people’s lives, as well as laying the foundations for longer term change. This complements the long-term vision set out in the National Disability Strategy, a progress update about which I laid in Parliament recently.
All Government departments consider the impact of policies on people protected by the Equality Act 2010, which includes disabled people. Through the Public Sector Equality Duty, the Equality Act 2010 ensures that the rights of disabled people are fully considered by UK policy makers.
Once again, thank you for having taken the time to write and I hope you will find this reply helpful.
Yours sincerely,
Tom Pursglove MP
Minister of State for Disabled People, Health and Work
